Lanphier girls track team excited, confident for state

May 18, 2017 Excitement was in the air as Lanphier High School girls track athletes arrived at Memorial Stadium for practice Wednesday afternoon. They were eager to begin focusing on handoffs and getting in some block work as part of their preparation for the Class 2A Girls State Track and Field Meet that begins Friday. Bolden, Moore come through for Spartans

May 11, 2017 Talk about a quick turnaround. Southeast High School sophomore Raven Moore qualified for the Class 2A State Meet with a runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash at the Southeast Sectional on Wednesday, then minutes later anchored the Spartans’ winning 4x400 relay. Win worth wait for Springfield High girls in suspended soccer game

May 11, 2017 As Rochester High School girls soccer coach Chad Kutscher called it, Wednesday concluded the longest halftime in the world. But it was a result worth the wait for Springfield High School. McKenna Mathiot took a chance and fired toward the net, squeezing the ball between the right post and Rochester keeper Emily Wollet in the 55th minute to give the Senators a 1-0 lead, which turned into a Central State Eight Conference win by that score at Lee Field. City Baseball Series: SHG defeats SSHS

May 10, 2017 City Series baseball has pretty much been the express property of Sacred Heart-Griffin High School for most of the 21st Century, and the Cyclones added to that legacy Tuesday night with a doubleheader sweep of Southeast at Lincoln Land Community College’s Claude Kracik Field. SHG (23-4 overall, 14-2 in the Central State Eight Conference and 6-0 in the City Series) used a 13-hit attack to win the opener 8-1, then survived a see-saw second game in a 13-5 victory. READ MORE

City Series: Springfield High finds their stroke in DH sweep of Lanphier

May 10, 2017 Springfield High School was shut out Monday against Southeast and got just five hits. But that seemed long ago Tuesday as Springfield High outscored Lanphier 26-2 over 10 innings to sweep the final pair of games in the City Series at Robin Roberts Stadium. The Senators won the first contest 12-2 and the second 14-0. It wasn’t just the Senators’ offense Tuesday. Lanphier scratched out just three hits over two games. READ MORE

Lanphier’s Aundrae Williams commits to UIS

May 10, 2017 One of the top high school boys basketball players in Springfield will also play his college basketball in the city. Lanphier High School senior guard Aundrae Williams has committed to the University of Illinois Springfield. The 6-foot guard said on Tuesday he plans to sign a letter of intent next week. “As soon as they brought me to the campus, I got to run up and down the court with the guys, and I felt like I was really at home,” he said. City Baseball Series

May 9, 2017 Andrew Fiaush hasn’t gotten a lot of chances as a starting pitcher for the Sacred Heart-Griffin High School baseball team, but he got one Monday in the first game of the City Series at Robin Roberts Stadium against Lanphier. The senior right-hander made the most of his opportunity. Fiaush earned his first victory of the season and helped the Cyclones clinch at least a tie for the city title with a complete-game four-hit shutout in a 13-0 SHG win. READ MORE

Cyclones stay unbeaten in Softball City Series

May 5, 2017 Abbie Antonacci and Katie Weller each had four hits and Sacred Heart-Griffin High School pounded Lanphier 21-1 Thursday in five innings to stay perfect through four days of the City Series at SHG’s Comstock Field. SHG (20-4 overall, 13-1 CS8, 4-0 City) has clinched a share of the four-team tournament with two games remaining against Southeast on Tuesday and Wednesday. READ MORE
