Lanphier and Southeast High School students will participate in the ‘Making The Grade Conference’ on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, from 8-11:30 a.m. Springfield High School will observe the conference and look for ways to implement the process December.
The key focus will be improving student achievement as students engage in a five to ten minute one-on-one meeting with community mentors and volunteers. Students will have an opportunity to discuss their academic and social strengths and weaknesses and plans to improve upon each during the remainder of the 2014 - 2015 school year.
“The Making the Grade Conference is a way for community members to reach out to our young people and encourage them to pursue academic excellence,” said School Improvement Coach, Teresa Kaiser. “Lanphier students are excited to reconnect with volunteers from last year and share their educational progress and future goals.” Community volunteers from Lincoln Land Community College, Benedictine University, Bradley University, ITT Technical University and the Air National Guard will be at Lanphier to meet with students.
Southeast piloted the program last year with the freshman class and will extend the opportunity to the sophomore class on Oct. 28th. “This is our second year participating in ‘Making The Grade Conference’ and we look forward to community volunteers and student peers offering words of encouragement and strategies to help our students improve and succeed in the future,” said Principal, Mr. Jason Wind.
