Palmer was chosen for his outstanding academic accomplishments, leadership skills and aspirations to serve his educational community in the future. He is currently deciding between Illinois College and SIU-Edwardsville.
“Brett is active in many Lanphier activities, including zero-hour band, Literacy Bowl, National Honor Society and the LHS Drumline. He is the senior class president and co-founded the LHS Math Club last year, “ said Lisa Leardi, Lanphier assistant principal. “Brett is positive, personable and charismatic. These qualities will benefit him and his students in his future career as an educator.”
The Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois is a scholarship program that identifies talented high school seniors who have the promise and drive to be excellent teachers in high-need schools.
The selection process is rigorous, requiring three essays, letters of reference, test scores, transcripts and an interview at the finalist stage. There were only 200 scholarships available in 2015.
