If all goes as planned, members of the Springfield High School Marching Band will keep a steady rhythm for six straight hours this Thursday, June 4, as they rock to raise funds for a trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando this Thanksgiving. The band’s first-ever Disney Rock-a-thon will feature three- and four-person teams of band members rocking (in chairs) continuously from 5-11 p.m. in the SHS Commons.

Each Marching Senator has been collecting pledges and is rocking to help raise $1200 for the weeklong experience, which includes performances on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom and the Disney Thanksgiving Parade of Bands in Hollywood Studios.

“I’m so proud of our students, who competed with bands from across the country via audition tape and application for this honor,” said SHS Band Director Kelly Goldberg. “A number of them have never been to Disney. All year long they’ve been working very hard to raise money, and they’ll work equally hard to learn the music, but the experience will be so worth it.”

“I’ve been waiting for a chance to play at Disney since freshman year,” said Noah Schlosser, incoming senior and current captain of the band’s drum line. “The Rock-a-thon is a fun way to raise the money we need. We’re focusing our entire fall marching season on mastering pretty complicated Disney music, and things like line formation, body posture and all that makes a great visual show. It’s a big challenge, but it’s also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform at Disney with my friends, and we want to make the most of it.”

Rock-a-thon participants will enjoy a festival atmosphere on Thursday, complete with games, Disney movies, and food. Supportive appearances by “guest rockers,” Sangamon County Sheriff Wes Barr, Springfield Chief of Police Kenny Winslow, and radio personalities Jim Leach (WMAY) and Chris Murphy (WNNS), are also planned.
Anyone interested in donating to support the 86 SHS students traveling to perform at Disney can send a check to: Springfield High School Band, 101 S. Lewis St., Springfield, IL, 62704. Please make the check notation “2015 Disney Trip.” All monies received will reduce the cost to each student of transportation via bus from Springfield to Orlando.
