Local business Barney’s Furniture has established a scholarship for first-generation college students graduating from Southeast High School.
The $1,000 will be awarded to students who are the first generation member of their family to attend a postsecondary institution of learning. Along with considering grade point average, applicants will be selected based on a one-page essay describing their intended educational and career goals, two letters of recommendation and a personal interview. Applicants must provide proof of acceptance of to a college or university. The scholarship(s) will be distributed to the recipient’s (s’) college upon enrollment.
In 1939, Bernard Seidman, opened Barney’s Furniture, an independent, locally owned store, at 7th and Washington in Springfield. For three generations the Seidman family has grown its business while also having a goal of contributing to the civic well being of Springfield. In 1974, the store relocated to South Grand Avenue East where it has focused on being a good neighbor to the surrounding area. Barney’s Furniture is now run by Barry Seidman, the grandson of the original owner.
