Students from five city high schools attended the 2nd annual Unity Day, hosted by the District 186 Superintendent’s Student Roundtable. The Roundtable is comprised of members of all three District 186 high schools and meets monthly with the Superintendent. The members decided to focus on service at this year's Unity Day event. They chose #ProjectMack which was started by a former Southeast High School student, Justice Collins and who's mission is to "Live a Life of Impact"
Participants heard about Project Mack from Justice via a video and then participated in ice-breaker activities, discussions and enjoy food together. They then created greeting cards for different groups or organizations such as, children at the hospital, custodians, etc. The cards will be delivered at a later date. Students enjoyed coming together and serving our community in a simple but impactful way.
The event was held at the Prairie Capital Convention Center on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017 and was sponsored by Springfield Public Schools Foundation.
High School students on the Supt. Student Roundtable discussed their current visits to all middle schools and made suggestions for next year's visits:
Only one or 2 students talk with a group of students
Create an icebreaker to begin talk with 8th graders
Would like to have more direct contact with the students in smaller groups to help facilitate question and answer time
Let all students ask questions
Liked the Tips Handout and would add about lunch and phones
Overall students felt the visits were very successful! They may visit the schools again before the end of the year and create a video for Freshman Forward.
