Parent to Parent Receives a Grant!

November 8, 2012

Springfield Public Schools District 186, Parent Mentor would like to thank the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln for a grant award in the amount of $500.00 for the Parent to Parent (P2P) support group.

Parent to Parent is designed to support the district families of students with disabilities.

The Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln is making a difference in the lives of our district families.

This grant will be far reaching within our support group.

Through the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln's generous support, the parent mentor will be able to increase outreach efforts within this support group.

As the parent mentor I can speak on the behalf of our district families by saying we are so thankful for this grant. This grant will allow more families an opportunity to attend meetings and gain valuable information regarding special education.

According to the Harvard Family Research Project, family support for learning is important for all students, but it may be particularly important for children with disabilities. One of the main tenets of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is parents’ participation in decision making related to their children’s education.

Parent-to-parent programs and support groups also can be particularly effective in providing informational, emotional, and motivational support to families of children with disabilities.

Belonging to these groups is positively associated with family involvement both at home and at school. The information above is one of the many reasons why the parent mentor is committed to ensuring that parents know how to be involved throughout their children's special education experience.

The purpose of P2P is to connect parents with each other. It's a networking effort to promote and encourage parents to connect with other families of students with disabilities.

The mission of P2P is to offer a sense of community, understanding, a place to laugh about the same things, talk about concerns and help each other.

I hope to see my existing P2P families as well as new district faces on December 12, 2012 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.@the downtown YMCA (our community partner) for the next P2P monthly meeting.
