Springfield College Benedictine University - BA Program

Bachelor of Arts-Elementary Education
When you choose to become an elementary education major at Benedictine University, you will work toward an elementary teaching certificate, Type 03 that will prepare you to teach in grades K-9 in any school or district in the state of Illinois. In addition, you will be able to teach middle school in an area of emphasis that you elect during your work in the Benedictine program. You will be prepared to meet the challenges of teaching in a diverse and changing world.

Preclinical experiences
Thirty-five (35) hours of general observation associated with course on History and Philosophy of Education. Student required to teach two (2) formal lessons, one about midpoint and a final lesson at the end of the 35 hour requirement.

Thirty-five (35) hours of observation of the teaching of Language Arts associated with the course, Literacy and Assessment. Student required to work with one student to assess student learning over time. Student will look at writing samples, fluency, word wall words, etc. Student required to teach two (2) formal lessons, one about midpoint and a final lesson at the end of the 35 hour requirement.

Thirty-five (35) hours of observation of teaching of mathematics associated with Methods of Mathematics course. Student required to teach two (2) formal lessons, one about midpoint and a final lesson at the end of the 35 hour requirement.

Student Teaching
The program includes a sixteen (16) week field-based teaching component in either a public or an Illinois Recognized nonpublic elementary or junior high/middle school.

All classroom teachers who host a student teacher will receive a tuition waiver for three (3) semester hours valid for both Springfield College and Benedictine University courses.
