On May 16th and 17th, Springfield Ball Charter School students worked side by side with local Springfield artist Jeff Williams, to create a mural featuring the students’ art work. This past fall, students at the Charter School, led by art teacher Maggie Mathenia, created artwork that was then submitted to Mr. Williams. The artist took points of inspiration from the student created work and reimagined their ideas into a cohesive mural. The mural is to be 4’x24’, split between three panels and will be a central focal point to the recent playground update at the school. The collaborative piece is flanked by two weathered garden sheds that are also being given new life with a fresh coat of bright stain, which in coming months will feature original art by another beloved Springfield artist, Felicia Olin. As 8th grade art students will be finishing up their work on the mural this last week of school, Mr. Williams and Ms. Mathenia will add final outlines and finishing touches to the project. The finished art is sure to be a show stopper, thanks in part to a grant received from the Springfield Area Arts Council.
