The 29th annual TECH 2019 student technology showcase will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 from 9:00am-3:15pm at the Illinois State Capitol Building in Springfield where hundreds of students and teachers will represent schools from throughout the state. At the event, students will show the public and members of the Illinois State Senate and House of Representatives how technology is being used in the classroom to increase student engagement and improve achievement.
During the event, K-12 students and teachers will demonstrate engaging projects that utilize 3D printers, video, graphic design, robotics, animation and more. Legislators are invited to attend the event to see first-hand the importance of technology in education today and to interact with students and their teachers.
This year we are adding a new element to the day’s events. A TECH Talk assembly between sessions will allow all attendees to hear from legislators and young innovators like themselves who will inspire the students with what they have learned in the classroom and how they utilize that to influence change outside the classroom.
Taking part in the demonstrations locally from Springfield Ball Charter School are Erin Sullivan, Maggie Mathenia, Broden Duecker and Josey Grant. They will be presenting a joint project they created in Art and Technology classes. The project is Doll-E 1.0 inspired by the book by Shanda McCloskey. The students created a doll in Art class and a program to make it speak in Technology class.
According to TECH 2019 Co-Chair, Joanna Carroll, “Personal devices, the internet, and digital content are the enabling tools of the modern learning environment, expanding the boundaries of the classroom while promising to transform all aspects of learning: teachers, students, and parents are provided access to tools and resources that promote accountability, communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking; digital resources and curriculum offer dynamic, engaging, and affordable content to enhance or even replace traditional print-based resources; and blended and flipped classrooms extend the classroom beyond the limits of the school day, promoting increased student-centered and self-directed learning opportunities that put educational resources directly into the hands of students.”
TECH 2019 is presented by Illinois Computing Educators (ICE), a statewide 503(c) non-profit organization dedicated to leadership in education through technology. Formed in 1986 by a group of 30 educators, ICE has grown to over 12,000+ members comprised of teachers, technology coordinators, library media specialists, administrators, higher education representatives, school support staff and other stakeholders in Illinois education. ICE continues to reach out to educators and partners who share the philosophy and dedication of developing leadership in education technology through the support and development of professional learning opportunities that provide growth and use of technology in all facets of the educational process.

Our middle-level students had two opportunities in one week to share what they know with younger students.  Our fifth grade students visited the second floor to get a look at what six grade looks like.  Our students shadowed their older peers in the classroom and practiced the transition from classroom to classroom on the bell schedule, complete with a trip to lockers.

Our current Social Studies unit is Colonial America. We recently learned Colonial Americans had to prepare almost everything they needed for cooking from scratch, including butter. Today we gave it a try. They loved it, especially eating it on crackers!

At the end of the 10-week Girls on the Run season, all of our girls in our 15 county territory will participate in Community 5k Event. This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience within the GOTR curriculum. Girls set running goals over the course of the program which helps prepare them for the final event. Completing the 5k gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when your girl realizes that even the seemingly impossible IS possible.

K-5 students enjoyed a "barn on wheels" during a visit from the Agventure Barn Tour. The Agriculture Education Partnership of Sangamon, Menard, and Logan Counties is an organization that was formed by multiple entities, including the Sangamon County Farm Bureau, who saw the need for agriculture education. These entities joined efforts to hire an agriculture literacy coordinator to carry out the AITC programs and educate students in Sangamon, Menard, and Logan counties about agriculture. The Agventure Barn Tour gave students the opportunity to see and pet live farm animals.
