Black History Month Activities at Ball Charter

March 1, 2019

Black History Month, also called African American History Month, is celebrated annually at SBCS and throughout the United States.  We take this time to honor historical leaders and highlight contributions made by members of the Black community.  Some of our 2019 lessons and activities include the Intermediate Soul Food Potluck, a middle-level field trip to SSHS with speaker, Dr. Shawn Anthony Robinson, and the human computers of "Hidden Figures" visit to our Primary classrooms.

Members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated portray Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughn, the NASA engineers featured in the movie "Hidden Figures."  They visited all four K/1 classrooms and discussed historical context, student career interests, and a review in telling time using a large clock and student volunteers.Members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated portray Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughn, the NASA engineers featured in the movie "Hidden Figures."  They visited all four K/1 classrooms and discussed historical context, student career interests, and a review in telling time using a large clock and student volunteers.Members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated portray Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughn, the NASA engineers featured in the movie "Hidden Figures."  They visited all four K/1 classrooms and discussed historical context, student career interests, and a review in telling time using a large clock and student volunteers.Mrs. Leamon, our school librarian, asked students to create poems out of titles of books in our library to celebrate Black History Month.Mrs. Leamon, our school librarian, asked students to create poems out of titles of books in our library to celebrate Black History Month.Mrs. Leamon, our school librarian, asked students to create poems out of titles of books in our library to celebrate Black History Month.Mrs. Leamon, our school librarian, asked students to create poems out of titles of books in our library to celebrate Black History Month.Mrs. Leamon, our school librarian, asked students to create poems out of titles of books in our library to celebrate Black History Month.Intermediate student projectsIntermediate student projectsIntermediate student projectsDr. Shawn Anthony Robinson, author of "Doctor Dyslexia Dude," gave an inspiring presentation to district middle-level students at Southeast High School.Mrs. HuddlestunMembers of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated portray Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughn, the NASA engineers featured in the movie "Hidden Figures."  They visited all four K/1 classrooms and discussed historical context, student career interests, and a review in telling time using a large clock and student volunteers.Intermediate Soul Food LunchIntermediate Soul Food LunchIntermediate Soul Food LunchIntermediate Soul Food LunchIntermediate Soul Food LunchIntermediate Soul Food LunchIntermediate Soul Food LunchIntermediate Soul Food LunchIntermediate Soul Food LunchIntermediate Soul Food LunchIntermediate Soul Food LunchBlack History Month Trivia Winners!Black History Month Trivia Winners!
