Iza Willis Wins Caribou Autumn Poetry Contest
Iza Willis has won the Caribou Cafe Autumn Poetry Contest. Here is her winning poem, "Ode to Autumn".
The crunching of leaves beneath my feet
Walking alone through the calm, empty street
With no conflict in sight but the wars in my heart
Delivers the hope of a brand new start
Isn’t that lovely in a way
When you find yourself surrounded by death and decay?
You‘ve been noted this cycle came back to fruition
Once again, my dear friend, to complete her mission
She never fails, she does it all
That’s why I love it in the fall
Others like scarves, leaves, and pumpkin spice
I like it when the air hits my face like sharp ice
She wakes me up on those cozy mornings
And gets me going in my stories
The call to action of autumn, I praise,
gets me through my toughest days
And her cycle continues for years and years
Thickening my skin and drying my tears
I’ve done it all before
And I’ll do it again
Telling my thoughts
Through the ink in my pen
Though some of our falls are muted and dull
It teaches us all we don’t need to be beautiful
To simply persist is enough when you’re aching
Do whatever it takes to stop you from breaking

FMS Artists Shine!
A very competitive and honored art show is happening this month at the Springfield Art Association. Schools from all over the MId Central Illinois Region entered works their teachers chose as exemplary. It is the Scholastic Art Show, in which the vast majority of works are done by high school age students, but middle school seventh and eighth graders are also considered. We had 27 pieces chosen to be entered by Mrs. Krumrei. It is quite an honor to be chosen to represent the school.
On this particular day, Saturday, Jan. 16, a panel of judges chose five top pieces from FMS to be in the show. These pieces are done by first semester 7th and 8th graders. They will be honored at the Honors Day Reception on Jan. 31st at Springfield HS auditorium.
The highest award was received by Allorah Garner, a gold key award, her painting will go on to be considered for a national award after the regional show. This is also Allorah's second year to have a piece in the show. This year her gold key was for her landscape Impressionist painting called , "Mountain Impressionsm".
Two students were chosen to receive the silver key award, seventh grader Rowan Goebel- Bain for his oil pastel, " Conquers All" a close up of water, and eighth grader Hannah Markey for her tempera Impressionist painting, of a landscape, " In the Meadow". This is the second year Hannah has had her work accepted into Scholastic. ( Last year she received Honorable Mention)
