Research shows that students lose learning during summer months. It is estimated that students lose up to two months of learning during an average summer. Summer reading loss can be prevented if students read four or five books over the summer.
This summer, Springfield Public Schools is launching the Springfield Reads 5 Program. Each student will be asked to make a summer reading pledge to read at least five books this summer.
In language arts classes, students will plan for summer reading, sign pledge forms, and be given a summer reading log. When students return to school for Open House on Thursday, August 19, 2010, they will be encouraged to turn in summer reading logs for a chance to win prizes.
The summer reading log is on the GMS website and a summer reading list can be accessed in the "links" section of the GMS website. Happy summer reading!
