The American College Testing program (ACT) administers an 8th Grade test called EXPLORE. This comprehensive test will provide information about your child's current level of preparation in English, mathematics, reading, and science. It will also provide information about your child's interests, needs, and plans for the future. The test will assist students in developing a high school course work plan that prepares them to achieve their high school and post high school ambitions.

All 8th Grade students in Springfield Public School District #186 will take take this test November 15-29. The results will be available for parents in January.

Before the week of the test, I will be visiting the Language Arts/Literature classes and talking about the importance of the EXPLORE test to the students. Each student will be bringing home some information entitled, "Getting Ready for High School and Beyond- helpful suggestions for students and their parents." We encourage parents to go over this information with their student. We know the 8th Graders at Grant Middle School will do their best. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me at 525-3170.
Thank You- Mr. Holcomb

You have probably heard about the recent death of a Virginia high school student due to an antibiotic-resistant staph infection called MRSA.

Good hygiene is the best way to avoid infection. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises the following:
1. Wash your hands thoroughly and often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand cleaner.
2. Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until healed.
3. Avoid contact with other people's wounds or bandages.
4. Avoid sharing personal items such as towels or razors.

We are in desperate need for 8th grade mentors for new students. If you are an 8th grader and would like to help new students adjust to life at Grant, please pick up a mentor application on the Student Support Room door. Get it filled in and signed by 3 staff members and turn it in to Mrs. Connolley as soon as possible. Thank you

Students cannot leave campus after-school and return it is too dangerous and not allowed. Anyone caught doing this will receive a PM detention for 1-½ hours cleaning windows, lockers ......

Please make sure you buy only what you can eat during lunch. Food/drink are not to be placed in lockers, this attracts rodents in the lockers.

Students please bring your checks or cash deposits to the cafeteria during breakfast. Doors open at 7:30 am everyday. Go to the ala Carte table and make your deposit, it is fast and easy.

The gym will be open all three lunch shifts today. The library will be open/closed all three lunch shifts today.

Those students with perfect attendance will be receiving a special treat from your guidance dean in the next couple of days.

We will have an extra recess for those students who did not receive any bouts of misbehavior through the month of October. We will have these extended recesses this Thursday, 11/08 (weather permitting). 6th grade- 9-9:30, 7th grade 12:30-1:00 and 8th grade 1:15-1:45pm.

Students please show respect to our veterans by keeping your hands off the poster display throughout our building. If you are caught hitting or touching a poster it will be a noon detention for hallway misbehavior.

At this time would all teachers please check your class for dress code violation? Any student with a violation, needs to be sent to the office. Teachers please write a minor referral and send to the appropriate dean at this time. No hoodies in worn during the school day.
