After working so hard on the ISAT, the third, fourth and fifth graders were able to celebrate.

This month's Reading Olympics winners had fun building a snow man the same height as Mr. Scott. They all enjoyed spending time in the snow.

The Sangamon County Farm Bureau visited Hazel Dell along with a few furry and feathery friends. The students really enjoyed their visit.

We had some students that returned their reading logs from the summer reading program. They were treated to a trip to Barnes and Noble where they received a free book of their choice. Following that they were treated to Dairy Queen. They worked hard to deserve this special reward.

It was the fifth graders who shared some of the fun things about the five books that the first, second, third, fourth and fifth graders will be getting for the summer reading. Enjoy reading!!

Hazel Dell 5th grades girls were on the move this Saturday, May 19th at Washington Park. Each girl completed 3.1 miles with a smile on their face. They worked as a team and helped support each other during the very warm event. Girls on the Run is so much fun!!

Mrs. Delong put together a fantastic Spring Musical. The following stories were presented through music and words, Pout, Pout Fish and Why Do Mosquitos Buzz. Thank you to all for your support of this wonderful program.

As part of the Girls on the Run curriculum, students are asked to design a community service project and execute this project within a specific time allotted. As a group, the Hazel Dell 5th Grade girls decided to collect stuffed animals to donate to children in need.

We were very lucky to have some of the most wonderful Southeast students help us with our Fall Festival. They worked hard from the time they walked into the school until the event was over. Thank you all.

What is the best way to help parents that didn't make it to the parent/teacher conferences? Go to them, that's what we did Monday and plan to do again soon.

Thursday, April 14 Hazel Dell had a Spring Fling. Students and families had the opportunity to rotate through several stations to enjoy a fun filled evening.

On Saturday, January 29th our students were invited to perform at the Springfield Public Schools Foundation Annual Dinner and Student Art Auction. The students and Mrs. Delong did a great job!

On January 27, Hazel Dell held a Family Reading Night. We kicked off the night with a performance by the Music Club to celebrate the new stage curtains. Class responses and art work were displayed for students and families to view.

On January 13, we had three guests from GenH come to Hazel Dell to model some Brain Breaks for our students. These are short activities to get our students moving to promote the notion of "healthy bodies equals healthy minds." Thank you Mrs. Flanagan!

The Ag. Barn stopped by our school on Tuesday, October 19 for our students to learn about some common farm animals. The students had fun petting and learning about the animals.

Fourth and fifth grade students gave Tinikling a try Tuesday at Hazel Dell. Tinikling is the national dance of the Philippines. It involves two people tapping bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with the music while one or more dancers step over and in between the...

On Thursday, October 14 over 20% of our students' families took advantage of several free health screenings as well as several staff and community members. While the adults were getting their screenings, our students enjoyed activities with CJ and Joey from St. John's Children's Hospital.

On Tuesday, October 12 the Springfield Junior Blues team came to visit Hazel Dell. They visited classes and read stories and then hung out with our students at recess and lunch. Our students had blast listening to them read and playing with the Junior Blues at recess!

Thursday, September 30 we had several visitors from Mathare Valley, Kenya and several Hope Church representatives visit with our students. The visitors explained what school is like in Mathare Valley and what the students study.

Tuesday, September 28 our school was fortunate enough to participate in the "100 Year Heart Fair." This was an opportunity for our students to learn how to make healthy choices so their hearts can live to at least 100 years old.

For an "out of the blue" party on Wednesday, September 22, our students were treated to an interactive play by the Windy City Players. The students had a blast.

A former Hazel Dell student's family owned business, Harvest Moon Designs, loaned a helping hand to help clean out our garden. Thanks!

On Friday, September 17 our staff visited several of our bus stops to say, "Hello" to our students. We had fun seeing our students and their families outside the school setting.

On August 30, our community partner, Hope Church donated a check to Hazel Dell to purchase several African style hand drums. Thank you so much Hope Church!

On Thursday, April 29 at approximately 1:45 p.m. one of our oak trees fell to the ground. We are very lucky that this large tree did not fall on our building or mobile units. Our quick minded teachers of course used this event as a teachable moment.

Once a year we plan a luncheon designed to meet the needs of 5th grade students/parents. They learned ways to help your child prepare for next year's transition from Elementary School to Middle School.

Another big congratulations are in order for our students who participated in the All-City Elementary Cross-Country meet yesterday. Out of a total of 75 or more runners at the meet, all 5 Hazel Dell runners had the best times! Way to represent Hazel Dell with pride!!

The focus of our kindergarten parent luncheon was Breakthrough to Literacy this is a literacy curriculum for preschool through third grade that introduces students to a book-a-week throughout the year. Students read everyday at school. On the computer,they will read and listen to many stories.

Unlike Mother's Day and Father's Days, Grandparents Day does not get a high level of media or commercial attention, but Grandparents Day is still a day of recognition of the important role grandparents play in the life of children.

At Hazel Dell Elementary School we are always looking for ways to have a positive impact on our students and our community outside of the classroom. On September 18, our principal,the school social workers,teachers and the school parent educator walked from door to door of our students homes.

On the afternoon of May 29, 2008 Mrs. Thomas took several Hazel Dell families to conservation world at the fairgrounds for the 3rd annual fishing with families event. This event allowed families to learn about fishing and catch a variety of fish in the stocked pond.

On May 29, 2008 Hazel Dell Elementary held its 4th annual family picnic. This picnic allowed the Hazel Dell staff and families to enjoy some time together before the end of the school year. Students played games after lunch and everyone celebrated the end of the school year.

Last Thursday evening April 17, 2008 Hazel Dell Elementary held the annual Spring Fling, math, science and publishing party night. Families had the opportunity to look at student writing from each classroom to see how writing has changed from the beginning of the year until now.

Hazel Dell Families endured the cold on Thursday evening to enjoy some quiet time reading with their children. This was a great evening and we look forward to seeing all of our families at our next event.

Hazel Dell Elementary School grandparents took time on Saturday to eat breakfast with their grandchildren and visit classrooms to see what learning is taking place at the school.

Hazel Dell Elementary School held our annual Donuts at Dawn family activity Tuesday morning September 11, 2007. Families were invited to come to the school and enjoy a donut, juice and coffee with thier children.

On Thursday evening August 30, 2007, Hazel Dell families enjoyed spending time with each other and Hazel Dell staff learning about the school and individual classrooms.

On Thursday May 24, 2007 Hazel Dell students, families and staff enjoyed the annual end of the year picnic at the school. This years event had a physical education theme and relay races, hula hoop contests, and jump rope contests were held.

On Tuesday May 23, 2007 Hazel Dell Families traveled to Conservation World at the Illinois State Fairgrounds to fish. This event was sponsored by the Deptartment of Conservation and families enjoyed catching a variety of fish in the fairground pond.

Hazel Dell's 1st respect, responsibility, and kindness event is held.

Hazel Dell Families took an hour out of their evening Thursday night to enjoy reading to each other and listening to Hazel Dell Staff members and students read. Families also had their pictures taken with a favorite story book character.

Hazel Dell students and parents enjoyed a full Thanksgiving meal prepared by cafeteria manager Brenda Walters on Wednesday November 8, 2006. Volunteers from Hope Free Church assisted Hazel Dell Staff in serving lunch, taking photos, and cleaning up after the event.

The Black Student Union from Lincoln Land Community College came to Hazel Dell to work with 4th and 5th grade students. LLCC students brought inspirational quotes and the message that education is the most important thing you can achieve.
