On this day in 1863, President Lincoln boarded a train for Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He was scheduled to give a short speech at the dedication ceremony for the cemetery of soldiers killed during the Civil War battle that had happened there earlier in the summer. His speech — the Gettysburg Address — became one of the most famous speeches in American history.
