STUDENT OF THE MONTH LUNCH
Today is the January Student of the Month lunch. Students — please show respect to our visitors by behaving appropriately in the halls.

HEALTH & SCIENCE ACADEMY
8th grade students —
If you are interested in learning about the Health & Science Academy at Southeast High School, please see Mrs. Gordy to sign up for a visit to SE. This visit will be Thursday, March 1st at 10:30 AM. You must complete a permission slip.

Mrs. Rennison is out of the building today for a conference. There will be no check in/check out today!

MATH/SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE
Saturday, March 10th from 8 AM - Noon, there will be a hands-on math/science/technology conference at UIS for girls only. See your math teacher for more information. Pick up a brochure and take it home!

AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL HERITAGE MONTH
The answer to Thursday's Black History question is....
Alex Haley
Alex Haley wrote the novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family. The novel, loosely based on Haley's own family, told a story of African Americans taken from their homeland and brought to the United States. The story told about their search for freedom and dignity. The novel was published in 1976, and was made into a TV mini-series in January of 1977.

Haley served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1939 to 1959 as the ship's cook during World War II. He was also the ship's chief journalist. On retirement from the Coast Guard, he became a fulltime writer. He interviewed Malcolm X and in 1965 he wrote The Autobiography of Malcolm X.
