IMSA traveled to University of Illinois- Champaign-Urbana to visit the Nanotechnology Lab in April. We learned about some of the work U of I is creating on the nano-level, participated in hands on activities, toured the Clean Labs, and listened to graduate students share their projects.

Jaguar PRIDE was on the prowl last night! The JMS PRIDE Patrol visited homes of students who were selected as "Most Improved" for the 2012-2013 school year.

While students were home enjoying a free day, teachers were at school learning! Friday, teachers learned more about the new Danielson System of Evaluation and developed a way to rate and plan for further Professional Development.

Tuesday, November 6th, was a School Improvement Day. Students had the day off, but just what exactly did the teachers do? On this day, teachers spent the day learning about Focus Lessons as part of the Gradual Release model for teaching.

Those JMS students who had perfect attendance for first quarter were invited to Laketown Lanes for free bowling. Congratulations to the 104 JMS students with perfect attendance for 1st quarter 2012!

To show appreciation for all of the extra things that our 8th grade WEB leaders do, they were given a surprise lunch of pizza!

Parent-Teacher Conferences at Jefferson Middle School received an extreme makeover this year! Student-Led Conferences where the classroom teacher becomes the facilitator of the conference as opposed to the leader, debuted Thursday evening.

JMS WEB orientation 2012 was a huge success! Thank you to all of the JMS 6th grade students and new 7th & 8th grade students who attended. A special thank you to our 8th grade WEB leaders ~ you did an awesome job!

Thank you Representative Raymond Poe for coming and talking to our 8th grade students about the importance of doing your best in school. Thank you to the high school ambassadors who talked to our 8th grade students about high school.

Several students had their PRIDE cards drawn and were given the opportunity to help JMS celebrate Earth Day 2012 by cleaning up the neighborhood. After being given gloves and trash bags, these students and adult volunteers walked through the JMS neighborhood and cleaned up.

Staff vs Students Volleyball Game

Over 90 JMS students had their PRIDE cards drawn for a very special "Out of the Blue" activity. These students were adopted by JMS staff members and members of our community and were given holiday gift baskets.

The 8th Grade girls that were on the JMS 7th Grade Volleyball team 2010-11 went to Benedictine University on 11/4/11 to see a college volleyball game. Ms. Saunders has a connection with the Columbia College, Missouri team, and arranged for JMS to be their guests.

Chris Carver from the SIU Cancer Center came to JMS and was presented with a $300 donation from JMS students. Students and Staff wore pink shirts to show their support for breast cancer during the month of October.

Jefferson Middle School students had the opportunity to listen to former State Senator Alice Palmer and her husband Edward "Buzz" Palmer speak about their hardships, challenges and successes in life.

Grandparents were invited to come to school and enjoy breakfast with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A wonderful time was had by all!

A special thank you goes out to the members of our community who took time from their busy day to come speak with our students about careers!

Those students who had 100% perfect attendance between March 8th & March 18th were rewarded with a dance this afternoon. Thank you for being in attendance every day during the ISAT testing period! Also, congratulations to Rodney J. ~ he won the iPod Shuffle!

As a reward for having at least 91% attendance for the school year and no referrals for the month of February, JMS students had the opportunity to watch a basketball game between our Sangamon County Deputies and the JMS boys & girls basketball teams!

Ms. V. Oldani and some of her students spoke with several of Jefferson's 8th grade students about Southeast High School's German Club.

Using Play-Doh and a MacBook, Ms. Wright's 7th grade science classes created stop-motion animation videos that replicated the life cycle of a virus. First, the groups of students were required to storyboard their project.

15 JMS students participated in today's Out of the Blue Activity! The students made candy treats. Each student picked a special teacher and delivered the surprise gift. What a great pick-me-up!

Mrs. McCorkle's & Ms. Joost's 6th, 7th & 8th grade Math Seminar classes visited the National Museum of Surveying in downtown Springfield. What a wonderful way to put books into the hands of our students! 6th, 7th & 8th grade students were taken to Barnes & Noble. Each student was allowed to choose $30 worth of books!

JMS held a staff vs students dodgeball game. Only students who have 91% attendance, no bus or discipline referrals for the month of November, and 2 or fewer Buddy Room visits for the month of November were allowed to attend and/or play. Everyone had a GREAT time!

Jefferson's Reading Night was a huge success -- over 200 parents and children attended the event! There were book talks by special guests; the Murder Mystery Room; the Book Swap; the Book Walk; the Graffiti Wall; and the Game Room.

Thank you to all of our grandfathers who took time out of their busy day to come to school and have breakfast with their grandchildren!

Over $300 was raised for our gender program! Mrs. Borders promised to kiss a pig if that was achieved. It was and she did! Isn't Sweet Pea just the cutest little thing?

Mr. Taylor's 2nd block health class welcomed Ms. Deb Durham, RD, LDN to their class yesterday. Ms. Durham is a registered dietician at St. John's Hospital. Her presentation dealt with maintaining a healthy lifestyle by making smarter food choices and staying active.

A very special guest speaker came to talk to our 8th graders today. His name is Milton Creagh. He delivered a very powerful message about staying drug-free and making positive and intelligent choices in life.

Several JMS students carved pumpkins this morning as an Out of the Blue activity. These pumpkins will be on display at Washington Park this weekend for the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular!

Mrs. Orama's 6th grade boys wrote holiday cards for Sergeant Chad Edwards. SGT. Edwards came to visit JMS today! He came to thank the boys for sending the cards as well as answer any questions the boys had.

A total of $512 was collected for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in our Pennies for Pasta campaign. Two lucky students were chosen to "pie" Mrs. Borders during the ISAT Reward Dance. Thanks for all of your support!

Nearly 60 students had their PRIDE cards drawn today and were treated to root beer floats during lunch. Keep showing respect for yourself, respect for others and respect for property!

Mr. Robert Davis visited JMS 8th grade students and told the story of Andrew Lewis. Lewis was a slave who escaped to freedom and went on to serve in the Illinois 29th Infantry of the United States Color Troops in the War Between the States ~ the Civil War.

Fun, fun, fun ~ That's what was going on at JMS for all of the 6th grade boys!! Boys were able to make slime & fake poop, put together an airplane, compete in an engineering challenge, create marble mazes, play board & video games, play ping-pong, watch a big screen movie, and eat pizza & popcorn.

The focus for the January JMS PRIDE Patrol was attendance.

Over 85 JMS students were treated to holiday gift baskets. Why? It was an "Out of the Blue" surprise! Keep earning those PRIDE cards. You never know when or what the next "Out of the Blue" day will be!

Students collected pledges for a United Way Walk-a-thon. Knox Church kindly allowed us to use there gym space for walking. A great time was had by all ---- lap, after lap, after lap!

It's great to be a girl at Jefferson Middle School! 6th grade girls had their first Girls' Night Out. Girls were able to eat pizza & popcorn; get a manicure; make lipgloss; make a crafty magnet; do an engineering challenge; play video games & board games; and watch Hannah Montana, the Movie!

In recognition of National Hunger & Homeless Awareness Week, JMS students attended an assembly to learn more about the plight of the homeless. Students learned that anyone can become homeless ~ the homeless are just like each one of us! We can help out by offering something as simple as a smile and...

The JMS PRIDE Patrol was on the prowl again! This time we visited the homes of all of the students who earned straight A's 1st quarter. Each student received a certificate, a pencil and an enthusiastic congratulations from the visiting staff members.

In recognition of Veteran's Day, students decorated sugar cookies with red, white & blue goodies!

Mrs. Stratton came to talk to our 8th grade students about the importance of the EXPLORE tests.

Our technology bowling fundraiser was a huge success! Everyone had a great time socializing and bowling. We even had a celebrity guest stop by ~ thank you, Dr. Milton!

What great fun! The 8th grade gender girls' classes had their 1st annual Girls' Night Out. The girls made trinket boxes and decorated them. After the craft activity, they headed out to the back porch for a wiener roast. Next came S'Mores and then off to Twilight Bowling for Technology. Success!

Students who have attained at least a 93% attendance rate were rewarded with a dance this afternoon. A good time was had by all!

Newly chosen WEB leaders for the 2009-2010 school year met to go over some of the activities that will be used with incoming students in August.

Congratulations to Saaj S. on her Silver Medal in the State Science Fair in Champaign on Saturday. Saaj competed with 1,300 other students. Way to go Saaj! Also, thank you to Kendra P. worked as a runner for the event. Good job girls!

As part of our end of the ISATs celebration, Mrs. Borders took two pies --- in her face! Two 6th grade students, Taylor & Zack, won the right to "pie" Mrs. Borders by donating the most money to the "Pennies for Pasta" campaign. JMS students donated $384.82 to help fight leukemia & lymphoma.

Jefferson Middle School hosted their elementary feeder schools in a day of vertical alignment. Fifth grade teachers spent Thursday, December 4th learning about the expectations, curriculum, and programs at JMS. Guest teachers had conversations with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teachers.

The JMS BETA club collected 608 hot chocolate packets that were sent to Soldier’s Angels and will be distributed to soldiers overseas during the holidays. The 6th grade students also made or signed 388 Christmas cards which will also be distributed to the soldiers.

Jefferson IMSA students study celestial law according to Kepler. They are able to describe the relationship between the speed of a planet orbiting the sun and its distance from the sun.

JMS 7th grade Health students took a tour of Lincoln Land Community College.

On Wednesday, the Jeopardy! Clue Crew from the TV show Jeopardy was at JMS! Jon Cannon, the Jeopardy! Clue Crew host, facilitated this fun-filled event. Some of Ms. Swaggerty's & Ms. Stewart's students played the classroom version of the show.

JMS has been chosen to host a classroom version of Jeopardy by the Jeopardy! Clue Crew. Ms. Swaggerty's 4th block students created personal invitations to send to Dr. Milton, his cabinet and the members of the School Board for this special event. Ms.

Thursday, Jefferson Middle School held a mock election. The officials at JMS are pleased to report that the mock election went very smoothly. 466 JMS students exercised their right to vote. The results are: 18% for John McCain 81% for Barack Obama

Our first "Out of the Blue" activity was pumpkin carving. The lucky students were able to clean, design, and carve a pumpkin that will be on display at the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular on October 17th and 18th at Washington Park.

Open house was Monday evening, August 25th. Thank you to all who attended! We served a lot of hot dogs and cookies but more importantly parents had the opportunity to meet teachers. They listened to the expectations that will help JMS students become more productive and successful students.

JMS hosted its first WEB Spring Play Day. WEB stands for Where Everybody Belongs and is a mentoring program which uses 8th grade students to help incoming 6th graders have a successful transition to middle school.

Several students participated in an Out of the Blue Earth Day activity this morning. Students walked around the JMS neighborhood and cleaned up the trash. Afterwards, they were treated to a nice cold bottle of juice or water. Great job!

Fifteen JMS students were chosen to attend an author's talk by Obert Skye. Mr. Skye spoke about his award-winning series of books Leven Thumps. His message -- HAVE COURAGE, THINK BIG & BE GREAT!

Bzzzzt! Carter G. Woodson. Bzzzzt! Langston Hughes. Four teams competed in the final rounds of Jefferson’s African-American Heritage Bowl. The sixth grade teams competing were from Mrs. Huffman’s 7th hour and Mrs. Beebe’s 7th hour. The eighth grade teams competing were from Ms.

The laptops are here! JMS 6th graders received training on iPhoto, PhotoBooth, GarageBand, and Comic Life. Later in the day, they received access to their on-line cumulative folders so they can keep track of their grades! Thank you to all of our special visitors for helping us in the classrooms.

Internationally known storyteller Bobby Norfolk visited Jefferson 6th graders. He entertained us with the stories of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.

Thank you to our community members who came to Jefferson this morning and shared career information with our 8th grade students! We had many careers represented -- law enforcement, the military, journalism, childcare, plumbing, and much more.

Never give up! Encourage others! Do your best! The NED Show came to JMS this morning! Our 6th graders were entertained with fantastic Yo-Yo tricks while being encouraged to do the right thing with their lives.

This December, JMS Beta Club volunteered at the Mini-O'Beirne Crisis Nursery Holiday Store helping young children Christmas shop for their families. We also collected over 400 cans of food that was donated to The Salvation Army to help local families during the holidays.

Thanks to the generosity of the employees from Huck's Convenience Stores, the holidays will be much brighter for 12 JMS students and their families. Students were treated to dinner at Old Country Buffet and then were given a shopping spree at Wal-Mart.

The PRIDE Patrol was in action again to visit and congratulate 98 of our students for making High Honor Roll and Straight A Honor Roll for first quarter. Great job!

The new MacBooks are here! On October 22nd our 7th grade students received an introduction to using the MacBooks. We're all so very excited to finally have these computers in the school.

The hot and humid weather didn't get us down. The JMS gym was rockin' & rollin' on Friday night with our Back to School Dance! A great time was had by all.

Despite a very hot first day of school on Thursday, we had a huge turn-out for our Open House. Families were able to have a nice dinner and then visit classrooms to meet the teachers. Keep showing that jaguar PRIDE!

Thirty-two students had their names drawn today and were able to pick out a free book! How did they win? They earned SSRW tickets during their daily SSRW time. Congratulations!

Mayor Tim Davlin has recognized the staff of Jefferson Middle School with a Bronze Award certificate. JMS staff contributed over $1500 to the annual Sangamon County Combined Campaign for the United Way. Great job!

JMS held its annual science fair Wednesday, January 24th. Over 200 people gathered in the gym to view the science projects! Congratulations to all students who received awards.

Tuesday evening the JMS PRIDE Patrol was on the move again. This time 47 students were rewarded for perfect attendance for the entire first semester. What an accomplishment ~ great job!

Wednesday, January 17th, Illinois Senator Larry Bomke spoke to our 7th grade students.

Twenty members of our community spent the morning talking to our 8th graders about careers in real estate, the military, landscaping, social services, hair styling, and so much more. Take a look at some of our sessions.

Since we couldn't find every student at home last night, we decided to have PRIDE Patrol Part 2 during sixth hour today. Here are a few of our honorees.

Tuesday, November 15th, several JMS staff members made surprise visits to Jefferson students who were on the High Honor Roll and the Straight A Honor Roll for first quarter. Although it was a cold and rainy night, a good time was had by all!

Welcome to Jefferson's Open House! Friends and families were invited to enjoy dinner in our cafeteria. After a hearty hot dog meal, school was in session! All were able to meet each of their student's teachers.
