Students interested in trying out for the JMS cross-country, cheerleading, girl's basketball, and boy's basketball teams will need to make sure that a current sports physical is on file prior to practices beginning. Physicals are good for one calendar year. Students without a current physical on file will not be permitted to participate. This applies to all grade levels (6th, 7th & 8th) as each year an updated sports physical must be on file.
Prior to Try-outs you must have current items completed on file in the JMS Athletic Office: Sports Physical, Athletic Permit Card, and Concussion Card.
Try-Out Academic Eligibility - Students must not have any F grade on his/her previous Middle School Semester Grade Report Card, and must have a Middle School GPA of 2.0.
All Athletic Fees are due within one (1) week of making a team.
According to IESA regulations, parents/guardians are required to attend a pre-season sportsmanship meeting prior to your student's participation in contests.
IESA/District Fees [$60 Total] - Scholastic Bowl, Cheerleading, Cross Country [6th, 7th, & 8th Grade Boys & Girls], 7th & 8th Grade Boys' Basketball, 7th & 8th Grade Girls' Basketball, 7th & 8th Grade Girls' Volleyball, and Track & Field [6th, 7th, & 8th Grade Boys & Girls].
6th Grade Fees [$30 each Sport] - Boys' Basketball, Girls' Basketball, and Girls' Volleyball.

SPORTS ~ OVERVIEW
Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) and District 186 Board Policy require students to submit the following items to the Athletic Director in the main office at Jefferson Middle School before a student may try out for a sport.
1. An athletic card with Athletic AGreement, Parent Permission Agreement, Proof of Insurance and Drug and Alcohol Policy sections completed. These may be obtained in the main office.
2. Copy of student's birth certificate
3. Physical examination report completed within the current calendar year. The date of the physical must be current for the entire season in which the student is participating.
For all IESA sports and activities, athletic as well as non athletic, passing work shall be checked weekly Monday through Saturday. Grades will be checked at JMS on Thursday to allow for coaches to be notified by Friday.
Students must be passing each subject each week to be eligible.
Weekly grade checks shall be cumulative and pertain only to quarter grades.
To maintain eligibility, students must:
1. Attain a 2.0 GPA in the previous semester;
2. Pass all classes in the previous semester; and
3. Pass all classes weekly during current semester
4. Any student failing to meet weekly academic requirements will be suspended from the sport or activity for 7 calendar days or until all academic requirements are met, whichever is longer. Any student failing to attain a 2.0 GPA or pass all classes in the previous semester will be ineligible for all contests/events during the subsequent semester. (see page 9, of District 186 Handbook)
Travel to Contests:
All students must travel to sporting events and activities and return home from such events with the team on which the student participates by using a school approved means of transportation. (see page 10, District 186 Handbook)
Open to 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys and girls who enjoy a fast two mile run. Practice begins August, and competition runs through the middle of October.
Season begins in September and goes through November. Any 7th or 8th grade female student is welcome to try out. The emphasis of this team is placed on fundamental skills and using team strategies.
6th grade girls basketball is a separate program. The games are played on Saturdays. The 6th grade program is a non-IESA program, and operates like and intramural program with both A and B teams. The season begins in September and ends in December.
The boys' basketball program begins in October and goes through January. Any 7th or 8th grade male student is welcome to try out. The emphasis of this program is placed on building fundamental skills and using team strategies.
6th grade boys basketball is a separate program. The games are played on Saturdays. The 6th grade program is a non-IESA program, and operates like and intramural program with both A and B teams. The season begins in October and ends in January.
Cheerleading is open to all students in grades 6-8. The season will run through January. Cheerleaders will perform at 7th and 8th grade boys' basketball games and other school events. Emphasis will be on developing cheer skills, leadership, and promoting school spirit.
Volleyball tryouts are held in December and goes through March. Try-outs are open for both 7th and 8th grade girls. Emphasis is placed on building fundamental skills and using team strategies.
6th grade girls volleyball is a separate program. The games are played on Saturdays. The 6th grade program is a non-IESA program, and operates like and intramural program with both A and B teams. The season begins in October and ends in January.
Open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade Jefferson students. Activities include both track and field events. The season runs from February through May.
This IESA activity is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. It is an academic game played by two opposing school teams of five players each who will try to answer a combination of toss-up and bonus questions. Points are scored by the team who buzzes in first and answers a toss up question correctly. That team then has the opportunity to answer a bonus question. The team that scores the highest number of points during a match wins the match.
