A workshop was held on September 8th, with Jim Dahlquist, Senior Manager of Training and Recruitment for Illinois Office of the Auditor General. Jim shared many tips and advice for interviews and being successful on the job. Jim started the presentation with several real life stories of adversity and people who overcame the situation. Jim emphasized, “Don’t let things discourage you from believing in yourself.”
Some interview tips offered include:
Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early to the interview.
Bring a notebook and take notes during the interview.
Don’t give only a “yes” or “no” answers – give a brief explanation.
Ask for the business card of the interviewer or get the correct spelling of their name.
Send a thank you note immediately after the interview.
Advice:
A bad job is better than no job at all
Learn as much as you can from a bad job, as it will help you figure out what type of job you want to do.
Don’t get in the habit of being fired or quitting, any gap in employment is a red flag to the employer.
A job doesn’t have to be your life, keep it in perspective with time spend with family and friends.
If you can’t find work, volunteer.
Show up every day, be reliable and trustworthy.
And remember it is not what you do, but how you do it. People will recognize you for it.
