The Springfield Area Literacy Council is a new not-for-profit agency, established to address the literacy needs in the Springfield community. The Literacy Council was initiated to address literacy needs no longer met by the VIA/Literacy program, as of July 1, 2010. Lawrence Education Center, Springfield School District 186, provided a home for VIA/Literacy for 25 years. When the District discontinued VIA/Literacy on June 30, 2010, the First Congregational UCC and Fishes & Loaves Outreach offered to provide a home for literacy programming in order to allow services to continue.
