American Education Week at Sandburg

November 7, 2017

Next week, Sandburg School and our nation will celebrate the  96th anniversary of American Education Week.  What is the significance of this special week?  In the resolution created by the National Education Association and the United States Office of Education in 1921, the purpose of American Education Week is to “inform the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs."

Sandburg’s accomplishments?  Previous issues of The State Journal-Register and Sandburg Sayings have highlighted some of Sandburg’s most recent accomplishments including strong PARCC test scores and state-level PBIS recognition.

Sandburg’s needs?  It may surprise you that our greatest need isn’t additional space or even funding.  It isn’t even more teachers or new technology or textbooks.  Our greatest need is your ongoing involvement in your child’s education.  Educational research clearly shows that the child is the winner when the home and school work together as a team.  What does that mean?  It’s not as difficult as one may first think:

  • Talk with your child’s teacher regularly.  Don’t wait until there is a concern.  Call the teacher and tell him or her you are just “checking in” to see how things are going for your child.

  • Read to or with your child every night for 20 minutes and sign the nightly reading calendar.

  • Make schoolwork a priority at home.  Make sure the work is done and checked nightly.

  • Talk in a positive way about school and your child’s experience.

  • Don’t be a stranger.  Visit the classroom, even if it’s only for a few minutes.  Your visit will send a powerful message to your child and the teacher that you are involved.

You are always welcome at Sandburg!  Remember, when the home and school work together, we will prepare your child for the future with an exceptional education.
