Sandburg: Four Things to NOT Say About Homework

November 7, 2017

If you've got a child who's frustrated by homework, it can be tough to stay calm, cool, and collected.  Though we may want to throw our hands in the air and walk away or even flat out give her the answers when she's struggling, those responses won't help our kids succeed at homework in the long-term.  Below are four recommendations about what parents should and shouldn't say to a child who's struggling with schoolwork. You'll be surprised how these four tweaks can benefit both of you!

  1.   Instead of: “I don’t understand how they teach math today.”
Say: “I learned math differently. Let’s look at your book and  figure it out together.”

  2.   Instead of: “You didn’t write enough here”
Say: “This is interesting.  I’d like to know more.  What else can you tell me?”

  3.   Instead of: “The answer is 38.”
Say: “Think through this one out loud.  Let me hear where you got stuck.”

  4.   Instead of: “I was never good at this in school either.”
Say: “I know this doesn’t come as easily to you as some other things.  Let’s tal with your teacher about what we can do to help you with this.”
