We are very proud to be an AVID school. But what does that mean? At Sandburg, it means our focus is on creating an achievable future for our students…all students. By teaching and reinforcing academic behaviors and higher-level thinking skills, our goal is create a ripple effect in later grades. Sandburg students will develop the academic habits they will need to be successful in middle school, high school, and college, in an age-appropriate and challenging way. Students learn about organization, study skills, communication, and self-advocacy. Students in an AVID elementary school take structured notes and answer and ask high-level questions that go beyond routine answers.
The strong college-going culture at Sandburg encourages students to think about their college and career plans. College and careers are not abstract concepts or just available to “some students.” At Sandburg, teachers provide the academic foundation students need to be on a path for college and career success. AVID Elementary closes the opportunity gap before it begins.
