Research has proven that there is a high correlation between school attendance and academic performance and success, while absence from school is often the greatest single cause of poor performance and achievement. Good school attendance begins now...in elementary school. Research shows that students who have not established regular attendance patterns in elementary school tend to never establish good school attendance patterns in middle or high school. So parents should think twice before allowing their child to stay home unless they are genuinely too sick to go to school. A strong “school is not important” message is sent to our children when we don’t require daily school attendance.
Why is it so important to attend school every day?
- Learning is a progressive activity; each day’s lessons build upon those of the previous day.
- Reading the material and completing the work independently does not make up for the loss of insight gained from the teacher’s instruction or class discussion.
- The more students miss school, the lower their grades; the lower their grades, the less they want to stay in school; the less they want to stay in school, the more likely they will drop out of school.
- Students who miss school are more likely to be at-risk for anti-social or criminal behavior.
It starts now. Make sure your child is in school every day!
