Since 2004, the Illinois Department of Transportation has been helping students explore the different aspects of engineering through field trips, group activities, and special guest speakers. Through this program, we have had great success in helping students to continue their pursuit of engineering to the college level and as practicing engineers. We have had Explorers from throughout the area (Athens, Auburn, Beardstown, Carlinville, Chatham, Jacksonville, Pleasant Plains, Rochester, Springfield, Taylorville, etc.). We would like for your students to join us for our “First Nighter”.
Exploring is a worksite-based program. It is part of Learning for Life's career education program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years old. The purpose of this program is to give your student practical, “hands on” experience in the engineering field and an opportunity to spend time with and be mentored by practicing engineers and technicians. The professional staff of IDOT District 6 and Central will supervise the program and donate their time to the participants. We offer scholarships and will try to accommodate job shadowing if desired.
We have a “First Nighter” scheduled for Wednesday – September 18th from 6:00 to 8:00 at the IDOT Central Office – 2300 South Dirksen Parkway in Springfield. It will be an opportunity for students, their parents, and teaching professionals to ask questions and for the students to sign up for the Engineering Exploring Program. The participation fee for new Explorers is $60.00 (payable September 18th), which will cover registration fees and the Engineering Explorers Post 6 T-shirt.
