Freshmen Band Letter

July 27, 2012

In just a couple of weeks, you will be starting your exciting career at Springfield High School. The “Freshmen Forward” program is a helpful orientation to get you started on the right track. The first day of this three-day program is on Tuesday, August 7.

On August 7, you will need to bring your band instrument to school. You may bring your instrument to the band room that morning before going to the other activities. At 2:30, we will meet in the band room. We will listen to students play a concert Bb scale to get an idea of how to assign parts. The music will be handed out for the fall so that students can start practicing before band camp. Students will also receive the newsletter, performance schedule, band handbook, and PE waiver forms.

Band camp is on Wednesday, August 15 and Saturday, August 18.
On Wednesday, the Drum Line & Flag Corps will start practicing at 9:00 a.m. The rest of the band will rehearse from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, everyone will begin practice at 10:00 a.m. Lunch will be provided by the SHS Band Parent Association at 1:00 p.m. At 4:30 p.m. the band will give an exhibition concert for the parents. The day will conclude with a Swim Party at Colony West Swim Club from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m.

Please make sure you have the following for camp:
*instrument in good working order — no stuck slides or broken keys, etc.
*supplies such as reeds, valve oil, slide cream, cork grease
*flip folder & lyre — can purchase at Rohlens or Samuel Music
*athletic shoes that tie for marching — flip flops are not allowed
*pencil
*money for personal uniform items by August 22 ($8 for beret, $10 t-shirt, $11 garment bag, and $26 for marching shoes). Checks or money orders only/no cash.

We look forward to meeting you.
