Good morning Springfield High! Today is Wednesday, February 7, 2018.

The Public Information Sessions for Springfield Area high school students interested in applying for the Sister Cities Association of Springfield (SCAS) student exchange in Ashikaga, Japan will be Monday, February 12.The session will be at 7:00 pm in the Board Room of the Springfield District 186 Administrative Center, 1900 West Monroe Street, Springfield, IL 62704 (next to Grant Middle School, across from Fairhills Mall). 

Valentine flowers will be sold before school and during both lunch shifts in the commons.  If you want to order a flower to be delivered to that someone special be sure to buy one at the low cost of $1.00 per carnation. The flower will be delivered to students on Valentines Day here at school.

Attention juniors & seniors: February is filling up with college visits. Presentations will be held during A and B lunches or on Wednesdays after school. You will not need passes to attend, but should sign up outside the post secondary office so representatives know how many students to expect. Please remember to sign up outside the post secondary office. This month we will have presentations from Lincoln College, Truman State, Western, Illinois Wesleyan, Missouri State, University of Missouri at St. Louis (UMSL). Any questions, see Mrs. Lauer.

Sophomores & Juniors-The Capital Area Career Center/CACC Open House is tomorrow from 5:00-7:00 pm, at their school location-2201 Toronto Rd, Springfield, IL 62712. This is a great opportunity for students to visit their programs.

Attention seniors: Please make sure you are checking the scholarship database weekly! Several new scholarships have been added. There are scholarships available for any high school senior, scholarships for Varsity athletes, future nurses, those going to a community college, vocational, technical or trade school, etc. Take advantage of this opportunity! Any questions, see Mrs. Lauer in the post secondary office! 

Celebrating "From Selma to Montgomery:  The Long Walk to Freedom" is the theme of this year's African American History Month of Celebrations.  The program will be held on February 23rd in the auditorium.

Also, all students are invited to participate in the essay, poster and trivia contests.  The trivia contest will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in February.  All answers should be taken to Ms. Mosley’s class, room 368.  Students should see essay and poster contests requirements posted in the halls.

A few students have inquired about the rules for BHM Trivia. They are as follows:

1. The game is not predicated on who turns in their answer first as we have some students coming up from the 1st floor to the 3rd.
2. Your class receives 1 point per correct answer unless otherwise stated in the question.
3. We will tally the points and determine if a tie-breaker is necessary (last year both winning teams received a party…with FOOD!) 
4. Have fun and learn something new to share with others!

Reminder to all 9th graders who have met with Mr. Schurman for scheduling please return completed and signed 10th grade registration forms to guidance office ASAP please. 

Attention Juniors: The Board of Education invites interested current high school juniors to apply to become the 2018-2019 Student School Board Member. One junior will be chosen to serve during their senior year. Applications will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2018 and can be found on our school’s homepage. Please see Mr. Williams if you are interested in applying. 

Attention JUNIORS: Eastern Illinois University is offering the Phi Beta Kappa Association scholarship. JUNIORS must apply by Tuesday, February 13, 2018. Students do NOT have to plan on attending EIU. To apply, go to  http://castle.eiu.edu/pbk/award.php or see Mrs. Lauer in the post secondary office!  

Attention SENIORS: Another scholarship has been added to the database! Check the Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Essay Contest. Deadline is February 28th and the contest will award $5,000 to 15 high school seniors. Students do not have to belong to a Regions bank to apply. Any questions, see Mrs. Lauer in the post secondary office!  

The SHS Photo Video club will be meeting tonight right after school in the commons. 

Attention all cast members of Footloose.  There is a mandatory meeting with your parents in attendance tomorrow at 7:00 in the auditorium.

Attention Seniors - Check the display case outside the office for your senior formal photo. If you had a photograph taken for the yearbook at Class Act and it is not there call 787-6688.

PIZZA, PIZZA PIZZA!! THURSDAY, THURSDAY, THURSDAY!! This Thursday Be A Senator will be selling hot, delicious Papa John's Pizza during both lunch shifts in the Commons. Enjoy a slice for only $2 or buy a whole pizza to share with your friends for only $16!! Thanks for supporting Be A Senator!!

The Lady Senator basketball team lost their first conference game of the year to Rochester 58 to 53. SHS had two people in double figures. SHS will look to get on the winning track by playing at SHG tomorrow night.
