February 13, 2018

Good morning Springfield High! Today is Tuesday, February 13, 2018.

Attention juniors & seniors: February is filling up with college visits. Presentations will be held during A and B lunches or on Wednesdays after school. You will not need passes to attend, but should sign up outside the post secondary office so representatives know how many students to expect. Please remember to sign up outside the post secondary office. This month we will have presentations from Lincoln College, Truman State, Western, Illinois Wesleyan, Missouri State, University of Missouri at St. Louis (UMSL). Any questions, see Mrs. Lauer.

Attention seniors: Please make sure you are checking the scholarship database weekly! Several new scholarships have been added. There are scholarships available for any high school senior, scholarships for Varsity athletes, future nurses, those going to a community college, vocational, technical or trade school, etc. Take advantage of this opportunity! Any questions, see Mrs. Lauer in the post secondary office!

Celebrating "From Selma to Montgomery:  The Long Walk to Freedom" is the theme of this year's African American History Month of Celebrations.  The program will be held on February 23rd in the auditorium.

Also, all students are invited to participate in the essay, poster and trivia contests.  The trivia contest will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in February.  All answers should be taken to Ms. Mosley’s class, room 368.  Students should see essay and poster contests requirements posted in the halls.

The rules for BHM Trivia are as follows:

1. The game is not predicated on who turns in their answer first as we have some students coming up from the 1st floor to the 3rd.
2. Your class receives 1 point per correct answer unless otherwise stated in the question.
3. We will tally the points and determine if a tie-breaker is necessary (last year both winning teams received a party…with FOOD!)
4. Have fun and learn something new to share with others!

Attention Juniors: The Board of Education invites interested current high school juniors to apply to become the 2018-2019 Student School Board Member. One junior will be chosen to serve during their senior year. Applications will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2018 and can be found on our school’s homepage. Please see Mr. Williams if you are interested in applying.

Attention JUNIORS: Eastern Illinois University is offering the Phi Beta Kappa Association scholarship. JUNIORS must apply by Tuesday. Students do NOT have to plan on attending EIU. To apply, go to  http://castle.eiu.edu/pbk/award.php or see Mrs. Lauer in the post secondary office!

Attention SENIORS: Another scholarship has been added to the database! Check the Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Essay Contest. Deadline is February 28th and the contest will award $5,000 to 15 high school seniors. Students do not have to belong to a Regions bank to apply. Any questions, see Mrs. Lauer in the post secondary office!

The Sadie Hawkins Dance will be held Saturday from 8:00-10:00 pm in the Commons.  Guest forms are located in the Guidance Office.  Remember that all guests must be under the age of 21, bring a picture id and the signed guest form the night of the dance. Tickets will be sold Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during both lunch shifts or you may buy them at the door.  All tickets will be $10 per person.

The next Feminist Club meeting is today in room 364. Remember the club is not solely for females as we encourage every one to attend and share their idea. See Mrs. Moseley Orr or Ms. Moon if you have any questions.

GSA has hidden painted rocks that support their message of inclusion around the building. If you find one return to Mrs. Eaton’s room 370 to claim your prize.

The Lady Senator basketball team will start the postseason Wednesday at Chatham starting at 7:30 against the host team.

Seniors, who have portraits from Grussenmeyer Photography, the deadline for your short senior quotes for the yearbook is February 26th.  Give credit to sources.

Attention all students, balloons, candy, flowers or any other gifts will NOT be accepted here at the school on Valentines Day.  So if your parent, significant other or your babe has anything delivered to you, it will be rejected and sent back.

Would you please now rise for the Pledge of Allegiance!

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, Indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
