"Real Men Read" is a District sponsored program that provides books to selected students in addition to male role models to serve as classroom mentor readers. The initiative seeks to help bridge the gap in literacy development and education for male students, by establishing an environment where boys have the chance to socialize and interact with one another while interacting with books. Research shows by validating their interests and establishing positive male interactions, boys read better and read more. The male mentor readers introduces the focus book for the classroom each month by reading aloud to the students and providing background knowledge/personal connections during reading. All books provided are the student's personal copies to keep and begin a personal home library.
