National Board Certified Teachers in Springfield Public Schools

June 25, 2012

Becoming a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) is not easy. The process takes months. The preparation is rigorous. Exhaustive portfolios are submitted. Candidates are videotaped in their classrooms. They painstakingly assess their own work. They are judged and scored. Many must reapply. Some do not make it.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, which oversees the NBCT process, even provides advice for how to withdrawal.

The high expectations placed on NBCT candidates is why Springfield Public Schools is proud of the roughly 50 National Board Certified teachers on staff at 19* of its schools. Only about ten districts throughout Illinois have more National Board Certified Teachers than SPS has.

The pay-off is well worth it. National Board Certified teachers are among the best. They hold themselves to the highest standards and are often mentors and instructional leaders in their buildings.

It is no surprise that a significant percentage of the districts Educators of the Year recipients are National Board Certified Teachers. NBCT designation is so significant, the State of Illinois and Springfield Public Schools provide financial incentives to encourage educators to apply.

To learn more about National Board Certification, please visit our NBCT website at www.sps186.org/nbct/. The site lists all of our NBCT teachers as well as what is involved in the certification process.

But the best way to learn about our National Board Certified teachers is to meet some of them. Please watch our NBCT video to get a glimpse of what they say about their National Board Certification and what it means to Springfield Public Schools and its students.

Good job recognizing elementary and honors high school teachers, but special education NBC teachers were not represented. And there are several. Don't you think parents of children with learning challenges would like to know that the same desire to bring your best is present at every teaching level?
