The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has proposed removing all state requirements on class size for students with disabilities, specifically eliminating 23 IAC Part 226.730, which pertains to general and special education class size. It is important that we understand how this may affect our current reality.
This change will mean no restrictions on how many students with disabilities can be placed in a general education classroom and there would be no restrictions on class size for special education classes. In some circumstances, there will be no requirements that special education classes have a paraprofessional assigned to the class.
