IRLA 6th Hour Class
Our Second Quarter 5th/6th hour IRLA classes have begun with continued focus on word study/ word analysis. We will be focusing on developing word-solving skills as well as expanding our vocabularies. This class will emphasize the following Common Core Standards: Vocabulary Acquisition and Use: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade level texts, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. Use context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. Use common, grade-appropriate Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., audience, auditory, audible). Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning or its part of speech. Verify the preliminary determination of the meaning of a word or phrase (e.g., by checking the inferred meaning in context or in a dictionary). Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. Interpret figures of speech (e.g., personification) in context. Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., cause/effect, part/whole, item/category) to better understand each of the words. Distinguish among the connotations (associations) of words with similar denotations (definitions) Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.
We will be reading mostly non-fiction and biographies this quarter.
Classroom Management Plan
Classroom Management Plan: Students are expected to come to class on time, ready and prepared to engage in their lesson that day. Time in class is focused on learning, so any behavior that interferes with learning is not acceptable. Students who have difficulties meeting class expectations will be warned and redirected. Second step: A "Think Sheet" will be assigned if a student can not be redirected to meet expectations. Third Step: Finally, an office referral will be made if the student is still not able or willing to meet expectations, and the students' parents will be notified.
