2012 - 2013

Check out what we've been learning about "Fall on the Farm"

The ABC’s of Early Childhood 2012-2013

A
Attendance: A successful school experience is the responsibility of the children, parent, and the school. Regular attendance, without tardiness is key to your child’s academic and social growth. If your child is going to be absent or tardy please call the school office.

Arrival: Students who are car riders should arrive at 9:00 A.M. or 12:30 P.M. There is no staff supervision prior to these times. No students are allowed in the classroom before this time.

Art: Students use lots of materials that can be messy. We wear smocks over our clothes but accidents can still happen. Always make sure your child is dressed in “school friendly” clothes if this bothers you.

Allergies: Please let me know if your child has any allergies, particularly to food, as we do have cooking activities in the classroom.

B

Backpacks: Each student needs to bring some sort of bag to bring home papers, library books, artwork, school notes, etc. each day.

Birthdays: You may send in special snacks to celebrate your child’s birthday. Summer birthdays will be celebrated in May. Please choose treats from our healthy snacks list to align with our CATCH Program.

Book orders: We will send home Scholastic Book order forms. This is a great opportunity for you to build your home library.

C

Computers: Students will participate in a variety of computer programs that reinforce math and pre-reading/reading skills.

Communication Books: Please keep the spiral notebook in your student’s book bag. I will check it here for notes from home and will write anything to you as needed.

D

Dress: Please dress your child in play clothes. Flip flops aren’t allowed at Lee School. They aren’t safe when climbing on playground equipment and when running. Additionally, the wood chips get into the flip flops and hurt! Please label any clothing that your child might take off, ie, hats, gloves, coats.

E

Emergency closings: If school is closed due to weather, local radio and TV stations will make announcements as well as the district webpage.

E-mail: You may e-mail me at bkress@sps186.org This is a great way to contact me! I check my e-mail frequently at school and at home.

F

Field Trips: In the past we have taken field trips and some years we have not. At our young age we really take into account safety and if we feel the group can handle anything away from school. Don’t worry though, we always take “school trips” on different areas of our campus and the children love those the same way.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program - Lee received a grant for this program that provides students with a fresh fruit or vegetable twice weekly. It is a great opportunity to reinforce making healthy choices.

F.A.C.E. - This is our Family and Community Engagement Team. Families are encouraged to attend and share thoughts, ideas, and concerns.

G

Good workers - are rewarded with Paw Prints. Students receive these from staff for showing respect for themselves, others and property.

H

Homework: I don’t send homework. However, I will occasionally ask you as a family to complete an activity at home as well as remember we expect you to read a book each day.

I

Illness: The question of when to keep your child home from school is often difficult, especially first thing in the morning. It is important to keep them home if he/she is ill. They are more comfortable and it prevents others from becoming ill. We have illness slips we will send home also indicating a need.

“I Can” Statements - Are all around our room. The students will learn these and know what our goals are for them.

iPods: We are fortunate to have one in our classroom for students to practice fine motor skills, literacy, math, and language skills. We are hoping for an iPad in the future.

J

Journals: Students will combine emerging writing skills with drawing skills when using classroom journals. As the students are exposed to more phonics and reading experiences, their journal entries should move from scribbles to drawing and include some inventive writing, their names, etc.

K

Kindness: Students are expected to treat all students with kindness and respect. Hitting, fighting, name calling and making fun of others will not be permitted.

L

Library: Our class library is open everyday and is always a choice during Center time. We always accept donations of books.

M

Music: Students will be singing about everything. Anything you can think about, I bet we have a song for it. We will also be a part of one of the music programs along with the elementary students.

Meals: Students in EC do not get meals at school. Instead, they are given a snack daily from the cafeteria. It consists of an carton of skim white milk and a snack. Twice weekly, in addition to that, we get our fresh fruits and vegetables.

N

Newsletters: I send out a classroom newsletter. It will be in your child’s Wednesday folder, but not every week. You will also receive a school newsletter. The newsletters can also be found on the Lee School website, as well as our classroom website.

Nurse: We take care of minor scratches and scrapes in the classroom. For more serious injuries or illnesses, we send the students to the the nurse. Make sure we always have the most recent contact numbers in case the nurse needs to reach you in an emergency.

O

Outside: The student’s play outside everyday unless it is pouring down rain or extremely cold. Please dress your child accordingly!

P

Parent/Teacher Conferences: Conferences will be held the evening of October 25th and all day on October 26th.

Parties: When we have parties we will send home a note prior to asking for supplies if they are needed.

Prizes: Your child may come home with small toys, books or games. This means they earned a trip to the Respect Store. Students may pick prizes when they have a birthday, win a game, etc.

P.T.O.: Lee School is fortunate to have a very active, generous Parent Teacher Organization. Please consider becoming an involved member and help support all Lee students!

Supplies: Please refer to the supply list under the "Info" tab

T

Toys: We discourage students students from bringing toys from home to school as they distract learning. Toys can accidentally be broken, lost, or stolen and we cannot be responsible.

Transportation: If your child will be going home differently from his/her usual means, you must call the office or send a note.

U

YOU are important in your child's’ education.

V

Visits: You’re welcome to visit us at any time. Lee School has a policy that ALL GUESTS are required to check in the office. This may seem inconvenient to frequent visitors, however, it is our responsibility to create a safe learning environment.

W

Wednesday Folders: All students will bring home a Wednesday folder with classroom and school information. Please check the folder and return to school.

Website: Lee School website can be accessed at www.sps186.org. On our classroom site you will find photos of activities, recent newsletters, classroom information and a link to contact me.

Wish List: We sometimes need supplies above and beyond our classroom materials. I will request those items as needed. Some of the items that we could use to start our school year are paper plates (cheap and all sizes) and small paper cups (bathroom size).

X

eXtra clothes: Each child will need a change of clothes, including socks. If we send them home in these extras, please replace.

Y & Z
