Read this poem, and then answer the questions that follow it.

grandmother
by Ray A. Young Bear
if i were to see
her shape from a mile away
i’d know so quickly
that it would be her.
the purple scarf
and the plastic
shopping bag.
if i felt
hands on my head
i’d know that those
were her hands
warm and damp
with the smell
of roots.
if i heard
a voice
coming from
a rock
i’d know
and her words
would flow inside me
like the light
of someone
stirring ashes
from a sleeping fire
at night.

“grandmother” from Winter of the Salamander by Ray A. Young Bear. Copyright 1980.

Directions:

1)Evaluate the grandmother's physical traits.
2) Her hands dripped with dampness. You could sniff the stench of roots from her hands. She embraced the plastic bag on her hands
3.) She is a beam of light that beckons through her character

The grandmother's traits have positive connotations. I can tell this by the words warm hands and flowing words. From the poem, I picture someone kind and gentle. I like your metaphor. I can see her as someone whose entire personality shines.

she smelt bad on the feet !

 chassity : )   Thu, February 17, 2011

WHY DID HE MAKE A PEOEM ABOUT HID GRANDMA

 DEANGELO   Thu, February 17, 2011

1) Analyze the poet's motives.
2) I think that the poet wanted to write this as a tribute to his grandmother. Perhaps he wanted to capture a moment in time with his grandmother so he could go back thirty years from now and remember her by the poem. I wish I had written about my grandmother while she was alive. Now, she's been gone so long that the memories have grown dim. The poet's memories will always be alive.
3) The smell of roots was the scent of a flower.

1. Is this personification or a metaphor? " Like the light of of someone stirring ashes from a sleeping fire. "
2. It is a metaphor, because it has the word 'Like' in it.
3. Her voice, like a soft wind, blowing through the trees.

This is not a metaphor at all. Mrs.Chavours told us that you guys need help with a metaphor so, us 8th graders are here to help. A metaphor is comparing two like things seemingly unrelated subjects that typically uses "is a" to join the first subjects.

Okay...."grandmother" is not a metaphor. A metaphor is a comparison between two unlike things without using like or as. Not just one word.
EXAMPLE: Grandma threw up fireballs of liquid.
And where is your question??? Where is your answer????

Reply

 CHEYENNE G.   Wed, February 16, 2011

Who in the poem is talking?
In the poem the grandchild is talking.
I think that the grandmothers words fill the grandchild with love. The grandmother loves the grandchild. Kashia W. I would rate the grandmother as a 7 because she fills the grandchild with loving words. The grandmother is too nice like a little puppy dog.
