On June 5th, The Springfield Astronomical Society and the astronomy department of UIS will hold a public event at South Wind Park starting at 5:15 pm for the public to view the planet Venus passing crossing the disk of the Sun. Because of the slightly different angles of the orbits of Earth and Venus, earthbound observers will not have another chance to see this transit for another 115 years. There will be special telescopes with solar filters for viewing this event. After the sun sets, telescopes will be available for viewing the night sky. SAS members will also be available to answer questions. This looks like a wonderful event and I encourage you all to attend.
