Should we have longer school days?

January 14, 2014

Many people are now proposing that we need to extend our current school day so that students would spend more time at school each day. Do you think that we should implement a longer school day or not? State your thesis and support your answer with text evidence. You may also respond to your classmates' answers. Be sure to quote text evidence when arguing against a classmate's response as well.

Watch these videos as two of your sources for text evidence: http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/bestoftv/2012/04/23/exp-point-perry-longer-school-days.cnn.html

No we shouldn't have longer school days because in the article "Quality VS. Time in the Classroom" the author declares that "students are already stretched to unhealthy breaking points, loaded down with excessive homework, extracurricular activities and outside tutoring."Moreover, in another article (SN) the author states that "Extended school days might be too exhausting for students."

We should have longer school days because in the CNN video it said kids can learn more things than what they're giving us. Kids can also get all their homework done in class. In the article "For Us More Time Is Critical" it said "The people want to extend the school day by 90 minutes." They also said "Kids can explore after school arts and join athletics."

No, we should not have longer school days. If we have longer school days some parents will be worried that it might be too exhausting for the student or child.(Scholastic News) Also, teachers will need more payment for more time. (Scholastic News)

No we should not have longer school days. One reason is that in the CNN video it states that in some countries like Finland kids go to school for less time and still outperform other countries. Another reason is, teachers would have to be paid more to watch kids longer (Scholastic News). Also, if kids went to school longer then they would either wake up early or go to bed late which will affect their learning because they will be tired and not have at least 8 hours of sleep (For Us More Time Is Critical).

No we shouldn't have longer school days. According to the Scholastic News article "there are also concerns that longer school hours take away from family time ." Also, according to the CNN video there are countries like Finland that have less time in school and they are at the top of the charts. However in the Scholastic News article it says "making school hours longer would be expensive to the school districts."

YES,we should have a longer school day because in article #4 it argues that we will have more time to do stuff, we can color, draw,or read. Addtionally, article #2 states that teachers will be able to help students with work , or students can read longer to catch up if they are behind.
In conclusion, we should have longer school days because we can do more assignments and get them done, we will have more free time , we won't have much homework to do ,when we go home, we can do something with our family and we don't have to do the homework.

No we shouldn't have longer school days. I say that because in article #3 paragraph #1, Mary A. Carskadon said if students have longer school days then students will have to stay up late doing homework. That would result in students having less sleep. My second reason is because in article #3 paragraph #2 Geoffrey Canada basically said that if students have longer school days then that's taking away from students' free time.

No we shouldn't have longer school days. The Scholastic News article reports that states say it is expensive to add longer school days. Longer school days would affect the teachers too. "Teachers and other school staff members would have to stay longer during the school day.Teachers salaries would have to be increased, raising costs even more." Additionally, Scholastic News emphasizes that longer school days would take away from students' family time at home and ''Some parents are worried that an extended day might be too exhausting for students."

No we shouldn't have longer school days. After reading the article "Let Students Sleep" I know that longer school days would decrease the amount of time students have to sleep. Also, Scholastic News states that if we have longer school days then less time will be spent with family or maybe doing homework.

Yes they should extend school days because after reading 'For Us More Time" if they extend the school days, kids will have better chances of getting into athletic teams and getting into school clubs and they would have more positive things to do instead of going home and doing negative things to get them in trouble. They also should extend the school days because in the [CNN] video kids have more capacity in their brains meaning that they can take in more knowledge than they really teach us.

No we shouldn't have longer school days because in the article "Quality vs Time" it states that "We need healthier, more balanced, more engaging and effective school days not longer ones". No compelling research supports a longer school day improves educational outcomes. Additionally, Scholastic News claims some parents are worried that kids are exhausted from school already.

Yes we should have longer school days because according to the CNN video we will have less home work to do at home. The CNN video also claims that more time at school equals more knowledge. Additionally, if you don't have support from your parents and you don't have supplies for homework you will not get it done on time. That is why we should have longer school days.

In the article "Let Students Sleep" the author tells that us students shouldn't have extended school days because students wouldn't get enough sleep and it may cause the students to work really slow and could affect the learning of the student.
In the article "Longer School Days?" the author states that we students should have a longer school day because, "The longer the school day will equal more knowledge and lesser homework for the student."

Should we have longer school days? Yes we should have longer school days. Reason one kids can get more information because if they only get a little information [CNN] they start to fail sometimes. Reason two, you can get your homework done instead of doing it at home. If you're at home and you're having trouble and your parents can't help you you are going to fail. [CNN]
