In mid October, District 186 learned about an innovative school safety reporting platform called Safe2Help Illinois. As we continue to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of our school communities, the District applied immediately and learned of the completion of our enrollment into the program last week. This was welcome news as we strive to provide every available resource to help our families, teachers, students and staff.
District 186 will immediately begin participating in Safe2Help Illinois. This program will offer students a safe and confidential way to share information that may help prevent suicides, bullying, school violence, and other threats to student safety. While we always want our students to reach out to a trusted adult, students can use Safe2Help Illinois to share concerns about themselves or others in a confidential environment should they need additional support.
Students can share information, ask for help and submit tips in the following ways:
Any confidential tips or information received through the reporting platform will be shared with District officials who will then involve the appropriate resources, depending on the nature of the concern.
It is important to note that this program is not intended to punish, suspend or expel students. Rather, the intent is to encourage students to “seek help before harm,” with the goal of intervening and helping students before they harm themselves or others. Additionally, this provides a means to “see something, say something,” if a student knows about a potential threat to others, the school or the community.
The Safe2Help Illinois reporting platform and accompanying curriculum resources will complement our established social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum, crisis protocols, mental health resources, and safety and security procedures. We’re excited to have this additional tool in our toolbox to provide support to students and ensure a safe and welcoming learning environment.
Please talk about this with your student(s) and encourage them to talk to a trusted adult or share information through any one of the channels provided through Safe2Help Illinois. More information about Safe2HelpIL can be found at www.Safe2helpil.com. We hope that you help us share this resource and promote its use.
Thank you for helping us create safe learning environments for all.
