Superintendent's Family Message May 20, 2020

May 21, 2020

May 20, 2020

It’s hard to believe that our Remote Learning Days for the 2019-20 academic year are coming to a close. With the wrap up of our school year, we have much to celebrate, even if we’re not able to do so in a traditional way we had all hoped.

If you have not had the opportunity to watch our Senior Recognition videos for Lanphier, Southeast and Springfield, I’ve provided the links here for you to view. These videos showcase seniors receiving special awards and honors, and we present them with pride.

Every high school graduate will also be recognized in our upcoming graduation broadcasts that will air on Saturday, May 30. This was the day that was originally slated for our commencement ceremonies, and the day still belongs to our seniors. We’ve put together a special program for each school that will air on TV and be streamed online. The schedule is as follows:

  • 10:00 AM: Lawrence Education Center

  • 11:00 AM: Lanphier High School

  • 2:00 PM: Southeast High School

  • 5:00 PM: Springfield High School

The broadcasts will be streamed on www.newschannel20.com, www.foxillinois.com and on WICS ABC Newschannel 20 and Fox Illinois Facebook pages. You can also tune to Fox Illinois broadcast station on your TV to watch this special presentation honoring the Class of 2020. Channels are as follows, depending on your cable provider.

WRSP+

  • AT&T U-Verse 55

  • Mediacom 9

  • Comcast 7

  • Cass Cable 2

  • New Wave 7

  • Prairie Vist Apts -Chatham 5

  • Dish Network 55

WCCU

  • AT&T U-Verse 26

  • Mediacom 7

  • Comcast 11

  • Direct TV 27

  • Dish Network 27

These options to watch make it possible for family and friends near and far to tune in and cheer for their graduate.

Additionally, we are offering an In-person opportunity for each of our graduates to walk across the stage and take a photograph. During the first week of June, we will host seniors and up to five guests (six total per family including the graduate) to come to their respective school’s field, to experience the rite of passage of crossing the stage and taking that final photo as a high school student. This plan has been approved in advance by our local public health officials and Regional Office of Education, so we will be adhering to the 6 person rule and enforcing it at our fields.

Attendees will be expected to follow the six foot social distancing guidelines while waiting for their photo opportunities. Graduates and their families will also be expected to wear a face covering while they wait. Additionally, there will not be access to restrooms or water.

We will be asking students to sign up for a time in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines, and those messages will be forthcoming directly from their schools. There will also be indoor plans in the event of inclement weather.

An in-person opportunity for Lawrence Education Center Graduates will be held Friday, June 5.

2020 Graduates - Please watch for messages from your high school to sign up.

Lanphier High School - June 1 and 2 from 10 AM - 6 PM

Southeast High School - June 1 and 2 from 10 AM - 6 PM and June 3 from 10 AM - 12 PM

Springfield High School - June 1 and 2 from 10 AM - 6 PM and June 3 from 10 AM - 2 PM

Lawrence Education Center - June 5 from 1-6 PM

It feels good to have our graduation plans solidified, especially in the face of uncertainty.  At this time, however, we do not yet know what the future holds for our 2020-21 academic year.  We are planning for a number of possibilities, but there is no definitive timeline yet from our state on when schools may open back up. We continue to seek guidance and understand what is possible. We will keep everyone informed along the way and we will be ready to do so in a way that protects our students and staff. We know one thing for sure, we miss our students!

Spark Hope,

Jennifer Gill
