Prekindergarten Curriculum and Assessment
Prekindergarten classroom teachers use the Creative Curriculum for Preschool, 6th edition, as the foundational curriculum for the teaching of all children. Based on early childhood theory and research, this nationally known curriculum defines: How Children Develop and Learn, The Learning Environment, What Children Learn, The Teacher's Role, and the importance of The Family's Role. Skills taught are based on the Illinois Early Learning Standards. Content is individualized to the interests of the children in specific classrooms to ensure relevant, meaningful learning.
Prekindergarten assessment is play based and intentended to monitor student growth and develop meaningful experiences in the classroom to support student goals. The Early Learning Scales (ELS) and the Assessment, Evaluation, Programming System (AEPS) are two of the tools used within the prekindergarten program. Summary reports regarding student growth and development are sent home three times during the school year: fall, winter, and spring.
