The Springfield Collaborative for Active Child Health is a community-based organization that promotes prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity in Springfield children. The Collaborative is an active group of academic, community, school and government entities, and primary care providers working together to improve healthy lifestyle behaviors through implementation of the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) program, healthcare provider training, and parent/caregiver education. Improvements in nutrition and physical activity are the goals. Funding of a Project Coordinator at SIU (and initially additional CATCH supplies for the schools) is through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. The group works with SUL Head Start and several District #186 elementary schools in supplementing the CATCH education for students.
