STUDENT SUPPORT LEADER'S CORNER:

MESSAGE FROM THE STUDENT SUPPORT LEADER (SSL)

Welcome Back to Dubois! A special welcome to all of our new families! I am looking forward to getting to know your children this year.

Since Dubois is such a large building we actually have two social workers on staff. Becca Abu-Saba splits her time between Dubois, Grant and Community Programs. She attends all of the IEP meetings, completes evaluations, and provides individual social work minutes in accordance with the IEP’S.

My role is full time in the building working primarily with behavior and teaching social skills. Our behavior program is called PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). We recognize that most of the students can follow directions if they are taught the behavior expectations here at school. For those students that require more help and reminders we have additional help we offer. You may hear your child talking about SSL lessons. SSL lessons are taught in most classes every other week. The first quarter we are learning school expectations and about respect. This will include skills to give and receive respect as well as respecting adults and authority figures.

During the day students can “earn” compliment cards by being “caught” making good choices. They collect these cards and can use them in the school store or through a teacher incentive. The school store is staffed by volunteers and has small prizes the students purchase with their compliment cards. During the week we will have an Out Of The Blue drawing. This drawing randomly selects students that have been following directions and either gives them a small reward or a snack/activity time out of class.

Finally our Good Citizenship Celebrations occur monthly. All students that have displayed good decision-making throughout the month are allowed to participate in this celebration. It varies all the time, but typically involves a fun activity out of the classroom. We are always in need of extra hands to help with this! If you are interested please let us know. Kids love to have their parents help out at school and it is a great way to feel connected here.

Feel free to contact me at any time. Whether you have concerns with your child or family stressors, I am here to provide assistance. We want your child to get the most out their education; academically, socially, emotionally and physically!

Thank you and looking forward to a great year,
