Anyone can get head lice . . . mainly through direct head-to-head contact but also from sharing hats, brushes and other personal items. The most common symptom of head lice in half of the children infested is head scratching, particularly at night, although red bite marks may also be noticed.

Please do your part to prevent the spread of this communicable condition by checking your child(ren).

As a routine home practice, elementary aged children should be checked for lice/nits on a regular basis. Nits look like flakes of dandruff or droplets of hair spray. The difference is that dandruff or hair spray will come off easily when the hair shaft is shaken, whereas nits are very difficult to remove.

If you see lice or nits on your child's hair, call the nurse at your child's school for treatment advice. Most children should not need to miss any school because of lice.
