Social Work News

Welcome back to school! What a busy beginning to the new school year. We are very happy to welcome so many new families to Dubois this year! A majority of my time is spent on behavior education and intervention. I spend time in each classroom teaching Social Skills Lessons (SSL). During September we are discussing friendships, diversity, and school behavior expectations.

We were fortunate to have Frank Feagan from the American Red Cross come in and talk to our first and second graders about preventing the spread of germs. He also presented our 3rd through 5th graders a program about safety tips when you are home alone. Spend some time talking to your children about your own rules for being home alone. Each student was given a take home sheet with some great discussion topics.

We use a program called PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) to promote positive behavior here at school. The main concept is that we need to teach all students what the expectations are at school. We break this down into all areas of the building and give two to four very specific instructions about how to act in that area. Students are rewarded when they are “caught” being good by being given compliment cards. These can be redeemed either in the classroom or through the school store for prizes or privileges.

When students have difficulty following these expectations we have a set of interventions that we use to support the students. Our faculty is very vested in the success of ALL students!
