March 1, 2010

Dear Dubois Families:

March of 2010 has arrived and we begin our month with the Illinois Standards Achievement Test. All third through fifth grade students throughout Illinois will be taking these tests both this week and next. All of our third, fourth and fifth grade students will be taking reading and math portions of the test while fourth graders take additional science tests and third and fifth graders take an additional writing exam. Please be sure that your child is present at school that day, well rested and on time as the tests will begin at 8:45 in the morning. Students will only be allowed the second week of March to make up the tests and we hope that we have few students who need that accommodation.

In an effort to get children to move during recess, Dubois is participating in "walk across America" during the lunch hour. Students will be walking around the blacktop of the playground a total of five times to equal a mile. Students from Mrs. Adkins' class will be keeping track of how many miles we walk in a day and then will mark the map that is located in the cafeteria. We will be starting our virtual journey in Seattle, Washington and plan to trek across the United States to Boston, MA. When the weather warms up we will be lacing up our walking shoes!

The week of March 15th one of our past student teachers, Jennifer Carter, will be hosting a spirit week with proceeds going to Haiti for medical supplies. Miss Carter is planning a trip to Haiti to assist in one of the hospitals and must make a $1500 donation to the hospital to be eligible to attend. Let's help her make that goal by giving a dollar a day to participate in different spirit days such as hat day or backwards clothes day. More information will be coming home in the Tuesday folders.

Last but not least spring break will be March 29th through April 2nd.  Please take some time to reflect on the growth of your student so far this year and look forward to what is to come. Please continue to have your child read every night or when they get home from school. Reading is critical to student achievement.

Thank you for your continued support -
