Dubois students DIBELing everywhere!!

September 10, 2009

As part of every child's instructional plan, an assessment called the DIBELS is given to each child three times during the school year. Your child recently took the DIBELS for the first time this year.
The DIBELS is an individually given screener that allows us to look at different skills that are needed to be a successful reader. In Kindergarten and First Grade, we look at Phonemic Awareness and Phonic Skills. In grades Second through Fifth, the student reads three different one-minute passages and then has to retell what they read. This gives us information about how the child decodes, comprehends, and how fluently they read. It is a valuable tool for the teachers at Dubois to use to help us plan an instructional program that meets your child's needs.
A sheet will be coming home that lists the scores your child received on the DIBELS assessment. It also gives the goal for a child at grade level for the beginning of the year. This goal will increase throughout the school year.
Please take a moment to read through the DIBELS page, and if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher or any member of the Dubois Instructional Team. As the year continues, we will keep you posted about your child's progress.
