Gift giving Ideas

December 1, 2008

With the holidays approaching, many of us think about gift giving. As parents, we usually try to get more bang for our buck by giving a few things that are both educational and fun. Some possible ideas are listed below.

Books- These are always a great choice. The PTO is sponsoring a book night at Barnes and Noble on December 3 and we will have book lists available to help you find the perfect book!

Flashcards- They can be gotten at the dollar stores for $1.

Deck of Cards- These can be used to practice basic facts, place value games and number recognition.

Dominos- These are great for number and fact practice.

Mancala- This game for thinking and stategies can be found at the Dollar store and toy stores.

Magnetic letters- These can also be purchased at some of the dollar stores.

Dry Erase Boards- They can be found at Walmart, Target, Kmart, and other discount stores.

Puzzles- These are great for spatial practice and logic.

Tanagrams- These can be found at Ergadoo and are for math reasoning.

Stickers- If you pick out the right ones, these can be used to write sticker stories.

School Supplies- These can be used at home or to replace the ones at school. Kids love new sharp pencils, crayons, and markers.

Leap Frog DVD's- "Letter Factory" teaches letters and sounds. "Talking Words 1 and 2" teach phonic skills. "Math Circus" teaches early math concepts. These can be found at Target, Walmart and other discount stores usually under $10.

Madlibs-These are great for practicing parts of speech and are under $5.

Wikki Sticks- These are waxed sticks that can be bent to work on spelling and word wall words. They're also great to practice geometric shapes. They can be bought at Ergadoo and sometimes Toys R Us.

Bookmarks- These are always a great choice.

Magna-doodle- This is a board with a built in eraser that can be used for word practice. It can be found at toy stores for under $20.

Library Card- This is gift that keeps on giving. It costs nothing and even if you can't make it to the library it can be used online with this link:

Here you will find Home Access for Scholastic BookFlix that allows your child to read and listen to picture books. There is Brainfuse that gives FREE
homework help. There is also Searchasaurus that has over 70 kids magazines for them to read.

Whatever gifts you choose, be sure to enjoy some time with your child reading and talking together. Spending time together is the best gift of all!!!
