Students from Mr. Zinnen’s 7th grade gifted history classes went to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library for a presentation by Dr. Christian McWhirter. Dr. McWhirter’s presentation on the Battle of Gettysburg in July, 1863 and then Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address in November of the same year. Regarding the Battle of Gettysburg, Dr. McWhirter exhibited a civil war cannonball, bayonet, mini-ball bullet, and a Civil War Union hat.
Dr. McWhirter then transitioned to Lincoln’s historic two minute address. Artifacts from the speech included an actual program from 1863, the only picture of Lincoln at Gettysburg, and souvenirs about the speech that included a poster and a plate. The outstanding presentation concluded with a question and answer session.
