Good Morning and Welcome to the new look announcements coming straight from the GMS studios. I’m Mr. Hood and this is Mr. Hoffek.
Over the long holiday weekend we had a few birthdays. On Saturday, 8th grader Kayla P. Sunday 8th grader Nevaeh T. And today 8th grader Khalilah W. all turned 14. Only 2 more years until your driver’s license! Happy birthday!
Today is Tuesday, so students with the last name A-K should be logging into Canvas and going to their Zoom links for each class. Students with the last name L-Z should be logging into each class on canvas and checking your assignments.
Now lets stand for the pledge of allegiance
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
You may be seated. Let us pause for a moment of silence. Use this time to personally reflect on ways you can be successful today.
Today’s weather includes an 80% chance of rain and thunderstorms this afternoon with highs in the mid 80’s.
In other news, we will be starting daily segments this week during our announcements. Starting tomorrow, we will be bringing back a GMS tradition called “wear it Wednesday”. Students, on Wednesdays (Thursday for B day students), we encourage you to wear GMS gear or college gear to your zoom meetings. Teachers, feel free to do the same.
In sports, the Cubs and Cardinals battled all weekend. The Cubs won last night, but Cardinal fans, you should be happy, as the redbirds won 3 out of 5 games. Cubs are still in first place though with only 18 games left. It was a sad day though for all of baseball when news of legendary Cardinal base stealer Lou Brock passed away at the age of 81.
In NBA news, The Celtics beat the Raptors, and the Clippers over the nuggets.
The Connecticut Sun clinched a playoff spot in the WNBA with an 85-70 victory over the Phoenix Mercury.
And it was a big day for Authentic who won the 146th Kentucky Derby on Saturday Authentic led the race wire-to wire.
The GMS baseball team has their final game of the regular season this afternoon at Hobbs Park.
For breakfast and lunch today, the cafeteria has prepared sausage biscuits and hamburgers. Remember, breakfast and lunch can be picked up in the parking lot behind GMS from 7:00-11:30. If you aren’t going to eat your food right away, be sure to store it in the fridge and then heat it up when you are ready to eat.
And now for today’s Welcoming Ritual. Labor Day was yesterday. Labor Day was added to the calendar back in 1894. It pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is traditionally observed on the first Monday in September. Labor Day usually marks the unofficial end of the summer season as most water parks and swimming pools close up for the colder months here in Illinois. What did you and your family do to observe this holiday?
That about wraps it up for today’s edition of the GMS morning announcements. We will be right back here tomorrow with another bad dad joke and more updates that you, the students, need to know. until then ladies and gentlemen, work hard and stay safe.
