On May 11, 2017, the 8th Grade AVID students and their parents/guardians participated in a night of learning about high school and college. Guest speakers came to speak with parents/guardians and students about high school and college.
Session I involved Kathryn Kleeman from the University of Illinois-Springfield. She explained what students would need to do in high school to prepare for college. Also, parents/guardians were given an explanation of the different types of financial aid that can be obtained and where to find the resources to apply for financial aid.
Raeven Epps, a former Jefferson Middle School AVID Student, spoke during Session II about making the transition from junior high school to high school. She spoke about expectations in high school, homework in high school, and friendships in high school. In addition, she spoke about her experiences as a freshman at Southeast High School and what she had to do to overcome her obstacles.
The final session (Session III) involved students presenting their end of the year 8th Grade College/Careers project to their parents/guardians. Students spoke about their goals and dreams for their future. The 8thgrade project involved students researching careers and colleges that began with the student taking an interest inventory. Students will take their exit project with them to high school to inspire them to remember their hopes, dreams, and goals for the future.
At the end of the sessions, students sat down with their parent/guardian to have dinner. The night ended with a video of the 8th Grade Students. Parents were able to see their students from 6th grade-8th grade and the work they have done in AVID class while at Jefferson Middle School. Throughout the video, inspiration quotes were embedded to continue to inspire students. It was a wonderful evening.
